Fiber and Felting

We have been raising Icelandic and Finn sheep for eight years and just began felting two years years ago. We have always loved our sheep but now have a new appreciation for their fiber. We make and sell functional items like hats, bags, rugs and slippers- things that will bring more of the natural world into our home. We are now developing a process to use our wool as a renewable resource for seed staring and soil amendment. We also enjoy the gourmet flavor and tenderness of their meat.

Wool is an incredible material and we feel enriched by working with it and using it in our everyday life. There are  many benefits of wool as it is

  • Mold and mildew resistant

  • Largely non-allergenic

  • Breathable and temperature regulating

  • Non-Toxic

  • Naturally resistant to water.

  • Biodegradable

  • A renewable resource

  • Easy to care for and is durable

  • Odor resistant and bacterial resistant

We do not use any chemicals on our farm and do not use any toxic materials to process our wool. We are currently making felt slippers, hats and bags by order. We will do all we can to make a perfect fit for you.  The softness and flexibility of the wool allows a certain amount of stretch so that the wool creates an almost custom fit. Additionally we sell sheep for meat. Please complete a contact form below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Icelandic sheep are one of the oldest breeds of sheep. Descended from the first short-tailed sheep to arrive in Northern Europe produce meat, milk, and wool. Icelandic wool is a sturdy and durable wool, making it popular in outerwear. It is used by knitters, crocheters, and weavers, it is also a favorite among crafters for felting.  This wool has two layers (a double-coat). The outer coat, called tog, is a true wool  and is particularly lustrous as well as strong and durable. The fine undercoat is called Þel (“thel”). Traditionally, these two fibers are spun together to create a yarn called Lopi.

Finnsheep also belong to the group of Northern short-tailed primitive races of sheep, arriving in Finland from Russia and Sweden. High fertility in Finnsheep is an  asset. Twins and triplets are common. Finnsheep are a multipurpose breed producing gourmet meat and soft, lustrous wool.
